Do not do DIY divorces if you have kids or property!
Today I saw a “pro se” (unrepresented) divorce decree where ex-husband got 100% of the house but wife was still on the note. Ex-husband stopped paying the mortgage and now she has to pay for a house she doesn’t live in, or she faces ruined credit.
An experienced family law attorney could have added protections so the house could have been sold if ex-husband was unable to refinance, or so ex-wife could have foreclosed on ex-husband. But now little can be done.
Beware of do it yourself forms. They give the illusion that lawyers are not needed for a divorce, and that divorce is simply checking boxes and filling out forms. This is not the case. Sometimes an attorney can fix your mistake later, but not always.
