AUTHORIZATION AGREEMENT

I got a call today from a grandparent couple whose adult child and grandchild live with them. They are doing the day-to-day caring for the child.

The grandparents currently don’t want to fight the parents for custody but want more ease in taking the child to the doctor, school enrollment, and other tasks. Texas law provides that both parents can sign an authorization agreement to give permission to a nonparent to perform these tasks. Combined with a HIPAA release to obtain medical records, this form could solve a lot of problems without court involvement. (Consult an attorney to make sure these solutions are right for you.)
